This report summarises the results of a 3-month field investigation on effects of first-year herbicide-free field margins on bumblebee and butterfly activity and diversity. The study is a minor addition to the ongoing large-scale project “Indicators of improvements in biodiversity in biotopes close to the field by establishing herbicide-free marginal zones” by Strandberg et al. The results indicated that herbicide-free field margins had no general effects on bumblebees or butterflies in hedgerows. In the field margins, herbicide exclusion had a positive effect on butterfly activity and diversity on sandy soils. There was an indication of a positive relationship between the diversity of utilized flowers and the diversity of butterflies in hedgerows.
