The study describes barriers and options for overcoming these in the introduction of natural gas (LNG and CNG) on ferry and cargo routes in Denmark. LNG in particular is a mature technology with few technical obstacles and substantial environmental benefits. A shift to LNG on the major ferry routes is likely to prove economically advantageous. The business case is however highly dependent on the assumed investment levels and the future prices on LNG versus marine gas oil. In some cases, further incentivessuch as public tenders and longer concession periodsmay therefore be necessary to reduce the uncertaintyrelated to profitability of an investment in natural gas.
