Biological Control of Weevils (Strophosoma Melanogrammum and S.
capitatum) in Greenery Plantations in Denmark

Abstract

The project aimed at developing biological control of weevils (Strophosoma melanogrammum and S. capitatum) that cause damage to fir in Danish greenery plantations (Abies nobilis). Insect pathogenic fungi were tested in the laboratory and applied in a plantation, in which the life cycle of the weevils was also studied. Metarhizium anisopliae showed a significant effect, which - due to the long life cycle of the weevils (approx. 16 months) - could be documented in the year after application. It is concluded that it is possible to develop biological control of weevils for practical use.
