Danish Criteria are effective for the identification of Endocrine Disruptors

A new investigation of 26 substances proves that the Danish proposal for criteria is effective for the identification of substances with endocrine disrupting properties. The information is an important contribution to the ongoing EU work that should lead to a proposal for common criteria for endocrine disruptors within the EU.

In relation to the work on criteria setting and the REACH process the Danish EPA has commissioned the Danish Centre on Endocrine Disrupters to examine the Danish proposal for criteria for endocrine distruptors by assessing the 22 substances on the so-called SIN-list 2.0. These substances have been identified by the NGO ChemSec as substances of very high concern (SVHC, Art. 57 (f) in REACH) solely due to their endocrine disrupting properties. In addition, 4 other substances have been assessed.
 
The overall aim of the investigation was to get practical experience with the different proposals of criteria for endocrine disruptors. The conclusion is that 17 of the 26 substances are evaluated as endocrine disruptors according to the Danish criteria proposal, 8 as suspected endocrine disruptors and 1 is not categorised due to lack of relevant data. Four substances are evaluated as endocrine disruptors according to the joint German/UK criteria proposal.

The investigation proves that the Danish criteria proposal is effective for the identification of substances with endocrine disrupting properties.

Today, there are no common EU-criteria for defining when a substance is considered as an endocrine disruptor. Denmark submitted a proposal for criteria for endocrine disruptors to the EU Commission in May 2011.
